The writer of Hebrews continually mentions the preeminence of Christ both in His person and in His ministry. In the Old Testament scriptures we understand that the rituals and ceremonies of Judaism symbolically point to the coming of the Messiah. In other words, the rituals of Judaism were only shadows of things to come. The Jews tell us that Christ Jesus is better than anything ordinary religion can offer. All the pomp and circumstance of religion pales in comparison to the person, work, and ministry of Christ Jesus. Therefore, the excellence of our Lord Jesus remains the theme of this eloquently written letter.
