The people to whom John is writing are in danger of being confused or even blown off course by all the different ideas, claims and would-be prophets swirling around them. From the hints in this passage and elsewhere, we can figure out enough to see what John’s readers might see as they, like Elisha’s servant, come out of the house in the morning and stare in dismay at the forces ranged against them.
